State-building, National Imaginings and 'Race' in Brazil (1870-1930)
This project seeks (1) to develop a theoretical framework for comparative historical analysis of "race" that combines recent theoretical insights from scholarship in three substantive areas --nations and nationalism, "race", and the modern state --in a single, synthetic theoretical framework; (2) to employ this framework to analyze the historical construction of the meaning of ''race" in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Brazil, focusing specifically on the design, implementation and contestation of the earliest modern censuses.
