Social Good, Economic Practices, and Islam in the United States

The growth of Islamic financial and philanthropic institutions in America is interconnected with visions of democracy. Working at the intersections of racial, gender, environmental, and economic justice, this project explores how ‘socially responsible’ economic institutions deploy claims of doing social good in American Muslim contexts. The research design involves twelve months of ethnographic research at two investment-based companies and two philanthropy-based organizations founded by American Muslims and mostly appealing to Muslim consumers. Examining the ethical self-representation and public relation of companies, this project also explores how Islamic values are negotiated at the intersection between philanthropy and new forms of capitalism.
