This project envisages an analysis of United Nations peace-building operations from the standpoint of their effectiveness in the field. The four core missions that characterize most peace-building operations - security, political stabilization and governance, humanitarian affairs, and developmental assistance - will be examined utilizing a common set of questions. The project will explore the problems and challanges in each mission area, the methods of adjusting operations to overcome obstacles, the relevance of one operation's experience for other operations, and the impacts (positive and negative) of these operations upon host countries or regions. Based on this analysis, the project will develop policy recommendations for future operations.
