The proposed study, “‘Welcoming The Stranger’: American Evangelicals and U.S. Refugee Resettlement,” analyzes the involvement of American evangelical institutions, organizations, and individuals in the United States’ refugee resettlement program. Specifically, this project will focus on an evangelical resettlement agency in Minnesota, and its national affiliate organization, World Relief. Through an ethnographic case study of the Twin Cities agency site and contextual research, I will argue that evangelical identity in refugee resettlement is not an anomaly – rather, it is the defining impetus of evangelicals’ civic engagement expressed through their resettlement efforts.
