Bio

Dr. Sumie Nakaya currently covers Sudan/South Sudan as political affairs officer in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the United Nations Headquarters. Her portfolios within the United Nations have also included strategic planning and crisis management in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, research and analysis relating to the Security Council in the Department of Political Affairs, and policy and program development on women, peace and security in the UN Women. Prior to joining the United Nations, Dr. Nakaya worked with the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum at the Social Science Research Council in New York to provide expert briefings on conflict and post-conflict issues, as well as the United Nations Association of the United States of American in New York to lead US-Japan policy dialogue, and the Association to Aid Refugees based in Tokyo to support humanitarian assistance.
Dr. Nakaya holds her PhD in Political Science from the City University of New York, MA in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and BA from the Sophia University in Tokyo. Her publications include journal articles and book chapters in academic press on post-conflict state building.
