The SSRC's Inter-Asia Initiative seeks to reconceptualize Asia as a dynamic and interconnected formation spanning the Middle East (including Turkey), Central Asia, Russia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Program activities have included three international conferences—in Dubai, Singapore, and Hong Kong—and discussions at all three events focused on ways to move beyond the territorial fixities of area-studies research without discounting the importance of contextually grounded, place-based knowledge.

The SSRC, in partnership with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HKIHSS) at the University of Hong Kong, Yale University, Koc University, and Gottingen University, is currently planning for the fourth conference in the series, Inter-Asian Connections IV: Istanbul (October 2–5, 2013). The conference workshops and activities will have the dual aim of showcasing innovative research from across the social sciences and related disciplines and exploring themes that transform conventional understandings of Asia.
