Policy Roundtable: “Improving the Quality of Health Care at the Grassroots Level in Viet Nam”

Professor Hy Van Luong presents key findings and policy recommendations from the Population Health Study. On July 18, 2017, SSRC Vietnam Program staff organized a Policy Roundtable to engage stakeholders in the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS)-SSRC logitudinal “Population Health Study in Three Provinces” and highlight key findings and policy recommendations from the study. The 49 roundtable participants comprised high-level and influential Party and government members, representatives from the Ministry of Health (MoH) and key national agencies and local NGOs, and project team members. SSRC and VASS Workshop on Developing Policy-oriented Presentations

On July 14-16, 2017, SSRC Vietnam Program staff organized a workshop on developing policy-oriented presentations, in which the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) – SSRC research team participated. This was the final workshop of the longitudinal “Vietnam Population Health Study in Three Provinces.” The study is meant to measure the results of the Atlantic Philanthropies’ comprehensive programming aimed at improving the commune health center (CHC) system in rural areas. 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Public Health

Two research teams from the SSRC-VASS Vietnam Population Health Study presented their teams’ research findings at the 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Public Health in Bangkok. Dr. Tran Thi Hong (left) and Tran Quy Long (right) co-presented their team’s paper on “Improving Antenatal Care for Vulnerable Women in Vietnam.” Their research found a large increase in the number of pregnant women receiving antenatal care and taking iron supplements within the 12 communes studied. This improvement was less significant, however, among the most vulnerable women in the study, including ethnic minorities and women with lower incomes or education levels. Dr. Nguyen Duc …

The SSRC Supports the National Vietnam Encyclopedia Project to Gain Experience from US Encyclopedia Projects

The Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity in Southeast Asia, one of four Atlantic Fellows programs that have partnered with the SSRC for strategic learning and assessment and developmental support, recently graduated 18 fellows from 9 ASEAN countries and China at the fellowship’s second Annual Forum in Hua Hin, Thailand. Throughout the six module induction year program, the fellows have developed their leadership capabilities and tackled issues related to health equity and its social determinants both within and beyond national borders. The SSRC Supports the National Vietnam Encyclopedia Project to Gain Experience from US Encyclopedia Projects

The SSRC’s Vietnam Program organized a study tour in the US for a delegation from the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), with the National Vietnam Encyclopedia Project. The project, which began in 2014, sets out to publish a 36-volume national encyclopedia, ranging in topic from society and culture to science and technology. The project expects to mobilize more than 600 scientists and scholars in Vietnam and around the world. The SSRC Connects a Vietnamese National History Project Delegation with American Scholars and Primary Sources

A Vietnamese research delegation working on a national-level research project, entitled “Studying and Compiling the History of Vietnam,” received support from the SSRC during their visit to the US to meet with experts and obtain primary sources. The national project will produce 25 volumes of Vietnamese History, five volumes of Vietnamese Historical Chronicles, and a Historical Database of Vietnam to be used in education and research on the country’s history.
